Editing images with Magic Edit
Magic Edit changes a picture you already have. Open it from the Library, send one across from Image Studio, or upload your own, then choose what kind of change you want and say what to change. Before anything is spent, the studio tells you what will change, what will be kept and what it costs. Exports carry embedded machine-readable AI-provenance metadata, plus a visible “AI-enhanced” label when the picture shows a real person.
What can Magic Edit do?
Magic Edit covers the common editing jobs in one place:
- Change something — describe a change in plain words and the whole picture is redrawn from yours. Good for a new look or a new mood; faces, framing and background can shift.
- Change one area (inpaint) — mark part of the picture and repaint only that. Everything outside the marked area comes back pixel for pixel.
- Remove something — mark an unwanted element and it is taken out, with the gap behind it filled. Everything outside the area comes back pixel for pixel.
- Extend the frame (outpaint) — choose an edge and how far, and new picture is added past it. The original stays where it is.
- Make it bigger (upscale) — enlarge the picture and add detail. Nothing in it changes.
- Read the text (OCR) — pull the words out of a picture and copy them. This one is free.
Only the first needs a sentence. Removing something, extending the frame and enlarging are all told what to do by what you mark or choose.
How does the before/after history work?
Each edit becomes the starting point for the next, so you can work in steps. Hold Before on a result to flip back to the picture it was made from, and Back to the original returns to where the whole chain started. Nothing is overwritten: your original stays in the Library, and every edit is also listed in your edit history with its before and after.
When are my edits labelled "AI-enhanced"?
Every Magic Edit export includes the always-on machine-readable provenance mark embedded in the file, and edits to a photo of a real person also carry a visible “AI-enhanced” label. If you are publishing an edited photo of a real person, describing it as AI-edited is still your step — see generated vs enhanced for where that line falls.
How do I get an image into Magic Edit?
Send a generated image over from Image Studio, or upload an image you already have. Once it's loaded, pick the edit you want, write your instruction, and run it. When you're happy, export it — Magic Edit results follow the same export flow as everything else. See previews and exports for the export options.

Does Magic Edit cost credits?
Yes. Magic Edit draws from the same shared credit pool as every other studio. Different edits have different costs; see the credit costs by type article for the breakdown.
Can I undo a Magic Edit?
Yes. Hold Before on any result to see the picture it was made from, and Back to the original returns to where you started, however many steps in you are. Your original image is never overwritten — it stays in the Library, and the edit history keeps every stage.
Will a Magic Edit export say "AI-generated" or "AI-enhanced"?
It depends on the picture. Every Magic Edit export includes an embedded machine-readable provenance mark on every plan; edits to a photo of a real person additionally carry a visible “AI-enhanced” label, and other edits carry no visible label.
